With the third coat of joint compound dry and sanded, it was time to prime the walls.

Two coats of premium primer are applied. I used a sponge roller to leave the smoothest possible finish.

A view of the other now-painted wall.

The corners blend into the existing walls and ceiling.

A laser line marks the top of the baseboard moulding, which allowed me to find the right height for
a new, custom return A/C grate. The grate is the same surface area as the old one -- 280 sq. in. --
in a stylish antique bronze finish.

The hole is cut in the new wall to accept the return grate.

1x2 boards are installed behind the drywall, inside the new duct to support the new grate.

The wood will allow me to screw the grate into the wall.

The location of the new grate.

The plastic is removed, showing the completed hidden return duct.
